An antique automatic candlestick telephone and separate ringer box manufactured by S.H. Couch & Company. Also called a Selector Signaling Telephone. Metal automatic dialer with working metal switching dial system. There is also a pushbutton for ringing the selected station. Black metal candlestick body and ringer box. Black Bakelite receiver and mouthpiece horn. Cord in good condition. Green felt under base. Stamped in black metal transmitter mouthpiece MADE IN U.S.A. BY S.H. COUCH COMPANY, INC. NORFOLK DOWNS, MASS. On brass plate, affixed to front of base AUTOPHONE PAT. MAY 17, 1910 PAT. JUNE 20, 1916. S.H. COUCH CO., INC. MANUFACTURERS BOSTON, MASS., U.S.A. Original wear to exterior. S. H. Couch was founded circa 1901 during the Independent Telephone Movement that ensued after the 1894 expiration of the Bell patents. Couch had offices in Boston and Chicago.
