Serial Number L437, issued c. 1943, self-contained with removable cover, probably from a destroyer, black metal with brass. Original brass plate PELORUS ILLUMINATED DIAL MADE BY THE LIONEL CORPORATION NEW YORK N.Y. This is not a compass but measures angle between beam and fore and aft line, or the horizontal angle between an object and the ship's head. A critical device for naval gunnery.
