A large engraved color print, THE TICHBORNE TRIAL, THE BEGINNING OF THE END, originally published in the January 31, 1874 edition of The Illustrated London News, by artist Valentine Walter Bromley. It depicts the courtroom, with judges, barristers, witnesses and members of the jury during the Tichborne trial, a legal cause celebre that captivated Victorian England in the 1860's and 1870's. It concerned the claims by an individual, usually referred to historically as the Claimant, to be the missing heir to the British Tichborne baronetcy. He failed to convince the courts, was convicted of perjury and served a long prison sentence. Artist signed V.W. Bromley. Valentine Walter Bromley (1848-1877), was the frequent art correspondent for The Illustrated London News and worked as a book thru illustrator. He died unexpectedly after undertaking an important series of illustrations of Shakespeare and the Bible. Presented with an antique linen matte in a dark wood and silvered gilt with floral pattern frame.
