Two color prints originally published in the series Tombleson's Views of the Thames and Medway (1833-1834). William Tombleson (1795-ca. 1846) was an English topographical and architecture artist, illustrator, copper and steel engraver, writer and printmaker. In the 1830's, his topographical drawings of the River Rhine in Germany, and of the rivers Thames and Medway in England were published as engraved prints and books. I. NOR thru E LIGHTS, depicting shipping at the mouth of the Thames. A central riverboat and its crew in rough waters, the view set in an elaborate foliate border. Marginalia is written in English, French, and German; II. CHELSEA HOSPITAL, MIDDLESEX, depicting the hospital from across the Thames, with sailing craft on the river and a boating mishap in progress. An intricately engraved decorative border features military symbols.
