Description
1 Large size early 20th century glass in metal rose button.
An example just like this one in a different color glass sold earlier this year at another button auction for close to $1000. The high relief molded glass Rose set in metal is reminiscent of the French glass artist of the time, Rene Lalique. Years ago the manager of the Lalique store on Madison Ave. in NYC, helped me in researching the designs made in buttons by Lalique in the early days. She discovered that there were 6 designs that Rene Lalique chose to use as buttons. One was the classic signed Nymph with genuine pearls and set in metal, a fox head in high relief set in metal, a moon face set in metal, a molded frosted snake set in metal, a clear glass with a wavy pattern in a contrasting color design and non metal mounted, and this high relief frosted and molded rose design. She said at the time of this research she discovered that not all the buttons were signed as the company of Lalique may not have valued the buttons as much as other glass they made. She also noted that the pieces mounted in metal like this example can be found mounted in cufflinks, boxes and other objects as they used the disks in various ways. This is a beautiful example. From the collection of the late Nancy Chumney.
