Description
A rare 19th century Charles Noke figurine.
A rare, early double-sided vellum figure designed by Charles Noke. It depicts the infernal apparition Mephistopheles and the lovely Marguerite, who holds a prayer book and wears an ivory dress detailed in gilt. The was Henry Irving and Ellen Terry's roles of the same names in the play Faust. The figurine may have in turn inspired a 1928 aquatint etching by the French artist Louis Icart (1880-1950), entitled Faust: Devil and Woman. The Vellum figures were made in limited quantities; all can be described as extremely rare. Gilt decoration throughout.
