Description
Large sculpture of Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire after Neo-Classical artist Jean-Antoine Houdon who represented the aging Voltaire as an Immortal with a large robe and a ribbon around his forehead. The brown patina on the cast enhances the details of Voltaire’s smile and his bony hands that grasp onto the large chair. This sculpture epitomizes the refined method of casting made at the French foundry Barbedienne. Carved on the left side of the base: Houdon. Fecit 1781. On the lower back: F. Barbedienne Fondeur. Includes the foundry stamp: Reduction Mecanique.
