Description
Lacquer and devotional gilding throughout.

Early 19th century Rattanakosin Period Thai bronze Buddha bust, a shrine statue with a lacquered and beautifully applied gilded surface. Gautama Buddha is modeled with a serene facial expression, and long earlobes, signifying his princely past. His head is topped by the Ushnisha, or crown of hair, a three dimensional oval and one of the most unique features of Buddhist art and iconography. Its original function was to symbolize a crown on top of the head of Buddha. The flame finial peak of the Ushnisha is missing. Excellent patina. Presented mounted in a decorative wooden base. Issued: c. 1840 Dimensions: 7.75"H x 5.75"W Country of Origin: Laos Provenance: Collection of John J. Lanzendorf
