Full title: A map of the South Pole, with the track of His Majesty's Sloop Resolution in search of a southern continent. A fascinating historical map tracking the HMS Cook's journey in search of the southernmost continent. Map documents James Cook's most southerly exploration point at 71 degrees. Antarctica would not be sighted until 1820 by a Russian expedition. T. Bowen Sculpt. printed to the lower right. Thomas Bowen (b. c. 1733-1790) was the son of Emmanuel Bowen, who was in service as the Royal Mapmaker to King George II and Louis XV in France. Thomas Bowen fell from grace and was jailed as a debtor in 1761 and died in the Workhouse in Clerkenwell, a home for the impoverished.
