Description
This auction features a Lionel model of the Southern Pacific GS-2 Daylight 4-8-4 steam locomotive and tender, road number 4410, produced in 1991. This model is a detailed representation of the original GS-2 locomotives, renowned for their striking Daylight livery and streamlined design. The Southern Pacific GS-2 locomotives were a series of six streamlined 4-8-4 Northern type steam engines built by the Lima Locomotive Works in 1936, numbered 4410 through 4415. They were the first to receive the silver, black, red, and orange Daylight paint scheme and were used for the debut of Southern Pacific's premier passenger train, the Coast Daylight, in 1937. These locomotives were capable of speeds up to 90 mph and developed 4,500 horsepower at 55 mph. During World War II, they were painted black and silver and used to transport troops. In the 1950s, their side skirting was removed for easier maintenance, and they were assigned to general service, including the San Jose-San Francisco Peninsula Commute service and freight operations. All GS-2 locomotives were retired between 1955 and 1958 and subsequently scrapped. Approximate train dimensions: 28"L. Box dimensions: 24.50"L x 11.50"W x 7.50"H. This item has its original box.
