Description
An exceptional MTH RailKing One-Gauge model of the iconic Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 Challenger Steam Engine, number 3977. This large-scale model, crafted with precision by MTH Electric Trains, features an intricate polycarbonate body and tender, with weather-resistant, authentic paint schemes designed for both indoor and outdoor use. The Challenger series represents some of the most powerful articulated steam locomotives ever produced, originally built for the Union Pacific Railroad to haul heavy freight over steep grades. The model highlights meticulous attention to detail with operational features, including an operating ashpan flicker, synchronized Puffing ProtoSmoke system, and constant voltage locomotive headlight. Additional details such as piping, ladders, throttles, and builder's plates add to the realism, while figures of the engineer and fireman populate the cab. Fitted with Proto-Sound 2.0 and digital command capabilities, this locomotive provides a rich sensory experience with synchronized chuffing sounds and advanced speed control, replicating the powerful performance of the original locomotive. The tender is marked Union Pacific and includes realistic coal load detailing. Union Pacific's 4-6-6-4 Challenger No. 3977 was built in 1943 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) and remains preserved today in North Platte, Nebraska, as a testament to the golden age of steam railroading. This locomotive was part of the effort to replace smaller steam locomotives with more powerful articulated designs capable of greater efficiency and higher speeds. Approximate train dimensions: 50"L. Box dimensions: 36"L x 14.50"W x 10"H. This item has its original box.
