Description
A printed souvenir edition of the "Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, Including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies". This document, commonly referred to as the Outer Space Treaty, is autographed by legendary astronaut Deke Slayton in blue ballpoint pen. It features a Kennedy Space Center postal cancellation, a First Day of Issue stamp, and two five-cent commemorative postage stamps. Adopted in 1967, the Outer Space Treaty is a cornerstone of international space law, establishing principles for the peaceful exploration and use of outer space. It prohibits the placement of nuclear weapons in space, the use of celestial bodies for military purposes, and claims of sovereignty over celestial bodies. It emphasizes that space exploration should benefit all of humanity, fostering cooperation among nations. Deke Slayton (1924-1993) was one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts selected by NASA in 1959. Initially grounded due to a heart condition, Slayton later served as NASA's Director of Flight Crew Operations. In 1975, he returned to space as the Docking Module Pilot for the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, the first joint U.S.-Soviet mission. Slayton's contributions to space exploration and his role in fostering international collaboration solidify his legacy as a pioneer of the Space Age. This lot includes a RR Auction Certificate of Authenticity, verifying the signature's authenticity.
