Wally Schirra (1923-2007) was one of the original seven astronauts selected for NASA's Project Mercury in 1959, making him one of the first American astronauts to fly in space. Schirra flew on three space missions: Mercury-Atlas 8 (Sigma 7), Gemini 6A, and Apollo 7. As the commander of Apollo 7, Schirra became the first person to fly in space three times, and his contributions were crucial to the success of NASA's manned spaceflight programs.
